They are considered a winter-hardy white grape with aromatic\/muscate characteristics.\n\nThe Aromella grape was developed in 1976 at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station at Cornell University in Geneva, NY, resulting from a cross between Traminette and Ravat varieties. However, it was until 2005 that Goose Watch winery owner Dave Peterson planted the grape in one of his vineyards. It took another eight years for it to be made into wine (the 2013 vintage), and another season to make it to the shelves.\n\nFlavor\nAromella grapes are used to produce a white wine that is similar to the Italian Moscato wine. Full of peach and other tropical fruit aromas, Aromella grapes produce a flavor that is consistently described as aromatic, exhibiting notes of pineapple, honeysuckle, citrus peel, and floral.\n\nUses\nAromella grapes are well suited for commercial production of aromatic\/muscat white wines. Because of these grapes’ high level of midwinter cold-hardiness and the ability to ripen mid-season, they are highly productive in upstate New York weather conditions and are a wonderful vineyard addition to allow for full-season growing. Its exact origins are unclear, but it has been fabled to have originated somewhere on the East coast from the Carolinas to Maryland OR somewhere in Asia Minor, probably around Turkey. During the early to mid-19th century, it was the most widely planted grape variety in the country and was the grape behind Nicholas Longworth’s Ohio sparkling wines that were distributed and acclaimed in Europe and across the United States.\n\nCatawba grapes are a vigorous, hardy, deciduous vine that thrives through humid summers and cold winters and has deep green foliage. Grown for its medium-sized clusters of round, dull grapes, this late-ripening variety isn’t typically ready for harvest until weeks after many other Labrusca varieties. And, like many Vinifera varieties, it can be susceptible to fungal grape diseases such as powdery mildew. It is planted and cultivated mostly around Lake Erie and the Finger Lakes wine region, but can also be found in Arkansas, Georgia, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Washington.\n\nFlavor\nCatawba grapes produce enjoyable wines that can be made sweet or nearly dry, with similarities often drawn between it and White Zinfandel wines. Most of these Catawba wines have a slight “foxy” character with mild berry and fresh fruit notes and a bright, smooth finish. Catawba wines made in the “methode Champenoise” — which was the process used to create the famous Ohio sparkling wines nearly 200 years ago — tend to have floral aromas and muted, fruity undertones.\n\nUses\nCatawba grapes are well-suited for jellies and juices as well as for making sweet white, red, and rosé wines. The high acidity in the grapes make them a great variety for blending, too. In fact, Catawba grapes are a large component of our Red Zeppelin wine. The name translates to “Green Wine of Veltlin”, in reference to an area in the lower Alps during the 1600s (Veltin is now part of Valtellina, Italy). The fruits are deep green in color and ripen in late September\/early October in the Northern Hemisphere.\n\nIts parent grape is Savagnin, causing Grüner Veltliner to be a half-sibling of Rotgipfler and either a grandchild or a half-sibling to Pinot noir (which has a parent-offspring relationship with Savagnin). Unfortunately, the true relationships are unclear since DNA profiling has not yet been able to determine, between Pinot and Savagnin, which grape is the parent and which grape is the offspring. Fulkerson Farms has grown this variety since 2010 despite NY not being a typical homeland for the variety. The vines are rather susceptible to downy and powdery mildew and only seem to be semi-tolerant of the cold New York winters.\n\nFlavor\nGrüner Veltliner grapes give off flavors of green pepper and lime, often being considered an exotic alternative to Sauvignon Blanc. When yields are high, the wines produced by Grüner Veltliner grapes are crisp and fresh, and can sometimes be concentrated and aged. Typically dry and full-bodied with a peppery nose, Grüner Veltliner wines can have a peachy and fruit-dominated aroma\/flavor. The primary fruit flavors in Grüner Veltliner are lime, lemon, and grapefruit, with a herbaceous flavor that comprises the flavor described as “peppery”.\n\nUses\nGrüner Veltliner grapes are typically used for winemaking, as their specific flavor isn’t usually preferred for eating. They can be made into wines of many different styles, although it is most popular in dry whites and some sparkling wines. The variety was obtained in France by crossing Munson and Seibel 3015. It contains genes from Vitis aestivalis, Vitis labrusca, Vitis lincecumii, Vitis rupestris and Vitis vinifera. The variety is grown mostly in the United States, specifically in Indiana, Iowa, Missouri, New York, and Pennsylvania. In 2016, only a total of 21 hectares of vineyards were reported in the US.\n\nLike many hybrids, it is productive and cold-hardy, producing fruit with a brilliant red hue. However, its susceptibility to both downy and powdery mildew, which means extra care must be taken in the vineyard. The vine produces medium-sized compact clusters of fruit, but production can be erratic; at times they’ll produce as little as twice a year or once every two years.\n\nFlavor\nVarietal Rougeon wines are usually dry, with excellent color and medium body. However, there are also sweet Rougeon wines that can also inherit the beautiful color and medium body, though of course, these tend to be mixed with other sweet grapes. The fruit creates “soft” wines that tend to exhibit dark berry fruit characteristics. Wines created with Rougeon grapes pair well with chicken mole (if a dry wine), pasta with tomato and basil (if a dry wine), and chocolate cake (if a sweet wine).\n\nUses\nRougeon grapes are not used alone to create wine, rather they are most typically used to give its color to blends, usually appearing alongside other hybrid grape varieties like Chambourcin. They are quite versatile, often used in sweet wine and in ports.
